17.10.11 Filippo Timi

Filippo Timi was born 37 years ago in Perugia. A stage and screen actor and writer, he studied acting in Bologna and began working in theatre with names such as Dario Marconcini, Cesare Ronconi, Robert Wilson, Pippo Del Bono and Giorgio Barberio Corsetti. His first film role came in 1999 in the comedy In the Beginning There Was Underwear, followed by Appassionate by Tonino De Barnardi, a film centred on Neapolitan music.

The collaboration with De Bernardi would continue with further titles: Rosatigre, Fare la Vita, La strada nel bosco and Marlene De Sousa. His theatre work carried on concurrently and in 2005 he won the Ubu prize for best actor under 30. In 2006 he returned to the cinema, appearing in the second work from Saverio Costanzo, In Memory of Me. Also in that year his debut novel was published, Tuttalpiù muoio co-written with Edoardo Albinati. From then he maintained a parallel career as a writer: his subsequent publications were E lasciamole cadere queste stelle
(2007), Peggio che diventare famoso (2008) and Racconti Perugini (2009).

In the cinema 2007 was the year he reached the apex of public success when Ferzan Ozpetek called him to play the part of Roberto in Saturn in Opposition. He appeared on cinema screens again that year with The Demons of St. Petersburg, by Giuliano Montaldo and Miss F by Wilma Labate. This latter performance earned him a Linea d'Ombra prize for best actor. In 2008 Gabriele Salvatores cast him in the tough-guy role of Rino Zena in As God Commands, which brought him a Nastro d'Argento for best actor, and again in that year he was seen in The Double Hour and Vincere. Bellocchio's film in particular underlines Timi's subtle talent for character interpretation, as he plays the part of Mussolini as well as that of the Duce's secret son. This film got him known abroad: he was nominated as best male actor at the European Film Awards, and in the USA, the New York Magazine rated him in the 25 performances of the year that didn't receive Oscars.
2009 saw him act alongside George Clooney in the US film The American, which led on to another tough-guy role as Enzo in Angels of Evil by Michele Placido. Timi has recently been at the Venice Festival with Cristina Comencini's When the Night, and played the part of Che Guevara in Missione di Pace by rising talent Francesco Lagi
