Screenplay:
Joseph L. Mankiewicz (3901)
Cast:
Marlon Brando, James Mason, John Gielgud, Deborah Kerr, Luis Calhern
Brief synopsis:
Probably the best film adaptation of the famous Shakespearian comedy. The plot is obviously related to the historic fact regarding the conspiracy plotted by his nephew Brutus and senator Cassius against Julius Caesar. They do not want Julius Caesar to turn the Republic of Rome into a monarchy. Once Julius Caesar has been murdered, Mark Antony (the real protagonist of the comedy)sides against the enemies of the dead dictator along with Octavian. Three years before this version, this film had starred Charlton Heston playing the role of Mark Antony that in our film and in two films more is played by Marlon Brando. Marlon Brando’s charisma, more human and vulnerable, has been more successful with public and critics. His monologues are still regarded as a great acting performance. At first also Paul Scofield (who 13 years later would win the Oscar for A Man for All Seasons) had been taken into consideration for the same role. Brando as well as the Cinematography and the Original Scorewere nominated to the Oscar.
