[5]Brief synopsis:
Nesrin and Hatun are two Kurdish cleaning women, who live in Istanbul. Their life is an endless back and forth between their homes in the shanty town and the classy neighborhoods, where they go to clean. They live in the same building, and their friendship has a hierarchy; Hatun is like the older sister. Nesrin lives on the ground floor with her daughter Asmin 5yo. Her husband has recently disappeared, and even if he was quite useless and Nesrin does not love him, her life is harder now. She is getting desperate and she looks for her husband everyday. Hatun lives with her husband Şero, and her not-too-promising son Oktay. She is naturally funny, clean, handy, and indiscreet. Her biggest dream is to buy a house in the neighborhood where she goes to work. She is obsessed with saving money and visits real-estate agencies all the time, ignoring the fact that this dream is more than impossible for her. As well, she has always wanted a daughter.

Kosovo 2004, five years after the war. Nenad is an introverted Serbian boy who lives with his father and his ailing grandfather in a tiny Christian enclave protected by United Nations KFOR troops. Nenad rides in a tank to and from school, where he seems to be the only pupil, and he has little involvement with the Albanian-speaking Kosovar kids who live nearby. One of these latter is Baskim, who holds a particular grudge against the Serbs, whom he blames for the death of his father. Evros River. The border between Greece and Turkey. By the riverbank an outpost and a deadly minefield that a platoon of volunteers are struggling to clear. A sapper, Yannis, holds the reputation that he can root out the death that is hidden in the ground, when detectors cannot help. An artist of the hazardous, a dancer in front of Hades’ mouth. No one waits for him anywhere. He has nobody. In the night, gangs transfer illegal immigrants across the river. Sometimes, the minefield breaks its dark silence, when the unfortunate step inside. A young woman, Chryssa, helps children to cross the river. They are children of the dejected, who come from the East dreaming of Europe. Chryssa has to provide for her father, her brother, and her baby. She gave birth to Myrto after a short love affair with Levo, who runs the mafia of the river.
Chryssa, guilty with every glance in the mirror, will stumble on Yannis. Challenging death is their common fate. Chryssa’s restless soul finds a shelter. She can escape the crude world with Yannis. And Yannis finds his family. Chryssa’s baby Myrto, becomes his own child. Riverbanks may be the story of this adoption. At a tiny spot on the map, the waves of history disembark human souls, and guilt and innocence are not identifiable. In a landscape where primitive archetypical desires move the people, we try to shed light upon select unconventional paths.

Theo, 11yo, sets off on his first expedition on the family fishing boat Simshar together with his father, grandfather and a Malian migrant worker. Disaster strikes when a fire breaks out onboard, leaving the crew stranded in open water. Meanwhile, tensions run high when a Turkish vessel rescues African migrants between Malta and the Italian island of Lampedusa, with neither country willing to allow disembarkation. Alex, a Maltese doctor sent on the ship against his will to provide medical care, gets caught up in the diplomatic dispute and is forced to remain onboard. His friend in the national armed forces, John, tries to get Alex back to land whilst assisting with the search for the missing Simshar. Theo’s mother Sharin desperately rallies the local community into conducting their own search. The deadlock at sea is finally resolved, and the migrants are taken in by Italy. Meanwhile, by the time the floating Simshar crew is located by the fishing community there is only one survivor…
