Karol Karol, a Polish hairdresser in Paris, attends court for the divorce proceedings brought against him on the grounds of his impotence, by his French wife Dominique, also a hairdresser. Outside the court she coldly gives a final goodbye, leaving him with a trunk containing his personal belongings. With his bank account now frozen. Karol is penniless and goes to sleep in the shop, for which he has the key. His wife turns up unexpectedly in the morning and he makes a final, unsuccessful attempt to make love to her. She further humiliates him during his subsequent phone calls by letting him hear the sounds of her and her lover's passionate sex. Now reduced to playing the comb “mouth-organ” in the subway, he bumps into a compatriot called Mikolaj. Mikolaj at first offers him the job of assassinating another Pole for money, but the plan goes wrong. So he helps Karol to return home to Poland in the trunk…which ends being stolen by some young hoodlums.
