Caravaggio rereads his letter to Battistello Caracciolo. He tells his painter friend how tormented his spirit is. How the murder he committed weighed on him like a great mass, while his painting fi lled him with joy. The governors of the Naples church of Pio Monte della Misericordia commissioned Caravaggio to create “The Seven Works of Mercy”, one of the most important religious paintings of the seventeenth century. In the painting, the fugitive both presents and hides himself among the persons that crowd into the canvas. All are watched over by a Madonna and Child, pleased at so much human mercy.
