Twenty two year old Majka has obtained a passport that will enable her to leave Warsaw and emigrate to Canada. She intends to bring little Ania, whom everyone believes to be her sister but who is actually her daughter from the relationship she'd had with Wojtec when she was sixteen. To avoid a scandal, Majka had agreed that little Ania be registered as the daughter of her mother Ewa. Ewa herself was unable to have any more children after Majka's difficult birth, and so began to develop a morbid affection for little Ania. Majka attempts to carry out her plan by kidnapping Ania and taking refuge at Wojtec's house outside Warsaw. She leaves again with the child but her mother tracks her down in a railway station. Ania, who is now aware of the truth runs to her “mummy-granny” while Majka boards a train alone and leaves forever.
