Among the group is Barbara and her lover Vanni, a character with a shadowy past, and Saro, a widower with two children. Having crossed the frontier, the group comes up against the implacable customs guards, who eventually relent and allow them through. In the end Saro and Barbara finally manage to create a new life in a strange country.
