Agnese, a sixteen year old student, is raped by her the fiancé of her sister Matilde. When the father finds out he tries to force the boy to marry Agnes and thus restore her honour. He initially refuses but gives in to the threats of the father, who then faces even more stubborn opposition from Agnese herself. However he eventually overcomes all opposition in the name of the family's honour and leads the young couple to the altar. However the father suffers a sudden collapse from which he does not recover; he dies, satisfied, on the very day of the wedding, while Matilde retreats to a convent.
