GIULIANA DE SIO

Born in Salerno on 2 April 1957. One of Italy's most skilled and versatile actresses. After studying in Cava de Tirreni she moved to Rome where she met the actress Therese Ann Savoy (famous for Salon Kitty andCaligula by Tinto Brass) and then Alessandro Haber, who believed in her and convinced her to try some auditions. She was chosen for the TV drama Una donna in 1977 and received praise for her performance. The following year Elio Petri cast her opposite Marcello Mastroianni in Dirty Hands by Jean-Paul Sartre. In the meantime, she had made her film debut in 1976 with director Luigi Filippo D'Amico. In 1979 she starred in Hypochondriac with Alberto Sordi, directed by Tonino Cervi. In 1982 came the two films that made her famous: the committed Sciopén by Odorisio and the comedy smash hit Scusate il ritardo (acting in tandem with Massimo Troisi who was also the director). 1983 brought more success with Io, Chiara e lo Scuro by Maurizio Ponzi, playing opposite Francesco Nuti. She won a David di Donatello for the latter film. Such was the success of the Nuti-De Sio partnership that in1985 they followed it up with Casablanca Casablanca. She made four other films with director Maurizio Ponzi (right up to the present ), consolidating a productive working relationship. Dario Argento cast her in Opera in 1987 but in the end Giuliana was not convinced and her place was taken by Cristina Marsillach. Through the eighties and nineties she worked with directors such as Giuseppe Ferrara, Carlo Lizzani, Mario Monicelli and Enzo Monteleone. Also worth mentioning isHeart , the 1984 drama directed by Luigi Comencini with Johnny Dorelli, which was hugely successful. The 2000s saw a major commitment to television, with hit series like l bello delle donne, Caterina e le sue figlie and Mogli a pezzi. She was also active in the theatre, especially in comedy and also starred in the stage version of The Graduate, in the role made famous on the big screen by Anne Bancroft. In 2012 she appeared in L’onore e il rispetto with Gabriel Garko. The she became a trade unionist for the TV drama Furore – Il vento della speranza.
