One of the most interesting Italian film directors of the last decade. He was born in Rome in 1969 and graduated in Political Science. He earned a diploma in Direction at the Experimental Centre of Cinematography in 1998. In those 90’s years, he realized documentaries (Van Gogh, Il neorealismo, La disfatta) and short films (Valse, Tre del mattino, Nastassia, L’età incerta, among others). His debut in fiction full-length films was immediately important; the portrait of the Albanian boy who emigrates in Italy with his father was presented at the Venice Film Festival. Saimir (2004) and achieved the Dino De Laurentis Award for the best debut and participated to the Berlinale. He also won a Silver Ribbon and two David di Donatello Awards. Four years later Il resto della notte was presented in at the Quinzaine des Realisateurs of the Cannes Film Festival, but has been received more coldly by critics. The film is about a robbery in a villa, through the stories of the characters in conflict with each other. After another six years, Munzi came back in style with Anime nere based on Gioacchino Criaco’s novel. Three young brothers, sons of a shepherd, get involved into the mafia twists in different ways, in Aspromonte. It was presented in the Venice Film Festival and won the Pasinetti Award and the Schermi di Qualità Award. Then it triumphed at the David di Donatello’s as Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and other six awards.
