He is one of the most promising emerging Italian directors. He was born in Rome on March 20th 1978. After taking a degree in Modern Literature in 2002 he enrolled in the Experimental Cinema Centre in Rome, where he graduated in 2005. In the meantime, he collaborated with the television program Blob and studied jazz guitar at the Saint Louis Music Centre of his hometown. His purpose was to direct a film and be able to also compose its soundtrack. He debuted in 2009 with the film The House in the Clouds, a road-movie awarded at the Rome MedFilm Festival and at the Brussels Film Festival. The same year his documentary Brothers of Italy was nominated for a Silver Ribbon and got a special mention of the jury at the Rome Film Festival. His next film of 2012, Alì has blue eyes, also participated at the Rome Film Festival and this time besides the Award for Best Debut and Second Film, it got the Special Jury Prize. It also participated at the Tribeca Film Festival. In Italy this film was distributed far and wide compared to the debut work. Giovannesi likes to alternate documentaries to fiction films, in fact his film Wolf participated at the Turin Film Festival, where it got the Special Jury Prize. After directing one episode of 8 x 10 Novanta, premiered in 2014 at the Venice International Film Festival, the prestigious participation of Flower to Quinzainedesrealisateurs of the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, in which two episodes that he has directed of the second season of the really popular TV show Gomorra are transmitted.
