Concorso FOTOgrammi : Giurato Sergio Siano

Rassegna:
Altri Eventi [1]
Anno:
2014 [2]

Born in a working class neighbourhood of Naples. From a creative background, his father was a crime photojournalist, and he in turn became a street photojournalist, a keen observer of the changing historical, political, cultural and social facets and customs of Naples. He started out in 1985 with his brother Riccardo on Il Giornale di Napoli and in 1987 he moved to Il Mattino. During military service in 1988-89 he was one of the photographers of the Cine and Photo Centre of the Army hierarchy, specialising in aerial photography. An artist of the lens, he has been involved in various publications and exhibitions. His solo exhibitions include 'Ultima dimora', which earned him the Lamont Young award, 'Minori di città', a photo narrative on the lives of children in poorer areas of Naples and 'Leggenda di un Bacio'. Many of his images can be found in various books and publications on the photographic history of Naples. He received the 2010 Cosimo Fanzago 2010 in recognition of his "intimate" connection with the city. He recently published his first book as author: Il Mare che bagna Napoli.

International title:
Alienazione e incomunicabilità
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
The inspiration of the project is the theme of alienation and non-communication, which Michelangelo Antonioni deals with in the film The Eclipse and in his other works. I tried to express this concept through images in which we compare two worlds: the external and the internal world of the main character, highlighting the way in which we sometimes live, estranged from reality; for the protagonists, absorbed in their own thoughts, other people no longer exist; they become evanescent entities, weightless, like ghosts ... this state means they are alone, even if physically they are not.

Frammento di sguardo [9]

International title:
Frammento di sguardo
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:

The camera captures a random object; it is a detail, the fragment of a story, a reality to imagine. Perhaps evidence of a crime, assumptions of reality. In his lazy shots the photographer Hemmings captures, in a park, the unexpected depths of private life, betrayal and death. But maybe it's just the suggestion of the ephemeral nature of the image, evanescent like an fictitious game between two mimes. Antonioni suggests an investigation of the gaze and critique of vision: does art build and amplify the illusions? Is it possible to decipher the world as well as represent it?

Destroy myself [13]

International title:
Destroy myself
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
In this picture I have captured the feeling of oppression I felt me while watching the films "The Red Desert" and "The Eclipse" by Michelangelo Antonioni. The characters of his films are in a constant state of conflict with themselves and therefore with the world. They feel oppressed by what they are and the pain of living crushes them, preventing them from being able to find a way out of the surrounding darkness that projects into their psyches. I tried to depict in my photography that sense of oppression and crushing, the feeling of falling apart and being overwhelmed by your own being.

International title:
Ho paura di non farcela
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
A loud backgound noise can be heard in the work of Antonioni; the uncertain step and twist as Giuliana slides on the inclined plane of her neuroses; she passes very close to the horizon line of the great outlines of industrial and technological civilisation, of progress and depersonalised well-being that rewrites ethical and moral concerns, while it de-structures sensitivity, and colours, with the arid and contaminated land, the gaze on humanity, on feelings, and on closest affections. Until it transfigures them into lifeless objects.

International title:
Interno eclisse
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
This photograph is the first of a triptych that seeks to demonstrate the themes of non-communication between individuals – so dear to Antonioni – who find themselves in a bedroom. Although captured in intimacy, the couple do not look at each other. They seem to be absorbed in different thoughts. The inspiration comes from the relationship portrayed in the film between Monica Vitti and Alain Delon, here played by Irene Grasso and Carlo Caracciolo.

Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
What the photographer character in Blow Up gives me is the feeling that everyone lives two lives in parallel; a conventional one, made from what is imposed on us on a daily basis by the society of doing, and therefore work; and another one dictated by the truest part of ourselves, the spontaneous part that responds to our instincts. The two parts may appear very different, but together they travel, accompany and characterise us.

Avventura di uno sguardo [28]

International title:
Avventura di uno sguardo
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
After the toss of a coin that captures a dream to be realised, the protagonist shows himself. But the coins seem to conceal another face on the right. And then, gradually the viewer's gaze penetrates in the shot and enlarges it. The main character looks like a prisoner behind grates that inhale and sigh. It is here that representation blends with reality and replaces it. As in Thomas' shot, there is less photographic objectivity, leaving us with an undisclosed doubt emphasising the courageous role of the man's gaze before a sometimes unknowable reality.

Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:

Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
A former market, a playground, and the boughs of the trees, now abandoned and deprived of their lifeblood. Places, things and objects now no longer such, but a mirror of incommunicability of feelings and experiences that show themselves in devastating external deterioration. A neglect that shows the bleakness of the soul, which, just as in the final scenes of the film, shows places of joy and love now devoid of their leading players. The silence is the only guardian of these non-places.

International title:
Sono scappato da tutto
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:
The light dazzles and invades the frame, almost cancelling the landscape, abstracting it. Two men, two identities - or maybe just one - walking away from us, bathed in light. Alive in a real physical place yet evanescent, apparently directed toward no where. Maybe they are lost in the middle of nothing, or themselves. Yet they walk purposefully towards the high horizon, which hides what might lie beyond: finally the destination, or an attempt at a new life, or a new hallucination equal to the present one, made only of glaring light and land. Print in black and white from photographic negative.

Description:
The image created might seem highly didactic compared to the films of Antonioni, but it tends to represent a state of anxiety (the crack of the door jamb) and the search for equilibrium (the egg as the beginning or end of all things) in the complex and polluted jungle that is represented by the female persona.

Io non riesco a guardare a lungo il mare
Festival:
Napoli Film Festival [5]
Year:
2014 [2]
Release date:
Saturday, 20 September, 2014
Description:

The sea became my subject because it perfectly embodies the feeling of infinite emptiness and almost deafening silence that I felt while watching this film and which materialises in Giuliana's line: "It never stops Never. Never, ever. I can't look at the sea for long. Otherwise I don't care about anything that happens on land anymore." It never stops and yet sometimes it seems so immobile in its immensity that it almost crushes us, as often happens in the landscapes of Antonioni, where the human being feels so infinitesimal compared to everything around him, that he might almost disappear.
