The documentary is a journey through a restless life, the life of a man possessed by music, his artistic and existential journey, between momentary wasting and continuous transformations, frenzied fractures and glittering serenity. Nato a Sacramento, California, USA il 13 marzo 1898. È molto conosciuto come regista di western, in particolare con Randolph Scott e John Wayne. Ha diretto inoltre Gary Cooper in ben sette film. A soli 10 anni diventa attore bambinosupportato dal regista Allan Dwan. Decide di lasciare la scuola e nel 1912 comincia a lavorare alla Universal Picture. Durante la prima guerra mondiale diventa istruttore di armi. Dal 1921 e’ assistente regista per Victor Fleming e Josef Von Sternberg. Nel 1932 debutta come regista con Randolph Scott in Heritage of the Desert.
