Bologna, the early 1990s. Roman property dealer Luciano Baietti is about to marry Fiamma, a beautiful but abstruse woman and the mother of his two sons, Paolo and Baldo. He also has her sign over two apartments to him. However, on the day of the wedding Luciano gets cold feet, abandons wife and kids and disappears in the company of his business partner Sergio Bollino. Years later Luciano finds himself with serious economic problems and in order to avoid liability, has to place his business concerns in the name of someone else.
Nuccio, Gerardo, Frida and Adelmo live among the narrow streets of their village, Oliveto Citra, in the Sele valley near the Picentini mountains. Summer is coming and the heat in the Sele valley hangs heavy. The four kids go down to the river bank, where they know a fisherman named Macario. The old man teaches them the secrets of the valley and the course the river takes – a metaphor for life – from its beginnings at the Sanità springs in Caposele, to its end in the Tyrrhenian Sea near Paestum. Driven by their strong curiosity, they discover these places in the Sele.
Patrick Martin è un ricco avvocato e allevatore nella città di confine (col Messico) di Nogales, in Arizona. Torna a casa e trova suo fratello Donald nascosto nel suo garage. Ex ubriacone, Donald era stato mandato in penitenziario cinque anni prima per aver ucciso un uomo in una rissa in un bar. Era legittima difesa, ma Patrick non aveva difeso suo fratello ed è stato condannato. Donald è scappato e vuole che suo fratello lo aiuti ad attraversare il fiume Santa Cruz fino a Nogales, sul lato messicano, dove sua moglie e i suoi figli in gravi difficoltà.
In Tunisia le donne, alcune giovani e altre anziane, sono accompagnate da alcuni uomini e si occupano della raccolta dei fichi sotto la direzione di un capo molto severo. Nel corso della giornata si creano rapporti, i giovani si corteggiano, altri ne approfittano per rubare o regolare conti.
