Warsaw. A woman named Dorata is in the midst of a crisis: her husband is Andrzey gravely ill in hospital and she is pregnant by another man. She has decided that should her husband survive, she will have an abortion. She thus seeks the advice of the hospital senior physician, an elderly doctor who had lost his family in the war and lives alone in the same apartment block as Dorata. Anxious to prevent the abortion, the doctor insists that although Andrzey is close to death, it is still possible that he may pull through.

Christmas Eve in Warsaw. Taxi driver Janusz is happily spending the evening with his wife and two children. Ewa – a former lover and someone in whose regard he feels guilty – comes to him asking for help in finding her missing husband Edward. They head out into the frozen, foggy night, prowling the city in Janusz' car on a fruitless search for Edward: Ewa is very agitated and acts aggressively towards Janusz, insisting that it was he who wanted to break up their relationship.

One day Anka finds a letter written by her mother before her death, to be read by Anka only after the death of her father. This, along with a photograph of her mother in the company of other men, disturbs the girl greatly. She does not however open the letter but instead tells Michal she has, and that she now knows that he is not her real father: they thus feel free to confess their own real and repressed feelings.

He is very disheartened but his wife does not seem particularly upset because she maintains that in a marriage only feelings count. Although he trusts her completely, Roman becomes jealous and starts spying on Hanka. He discovers that she does have lover- a young physics student named Marius. After an unpleasant and humiliating scene for both of them, Roman forgives Hanka. She promises not to lie to him again.

In the streets of Warsaw, an unemployed and restless young man Jacek commits acts of vandalism and finally kills a taxi driver. After his arrest, Jacek's defence is handled by Piotr, a young lawyer who is intent on avoiding a death sentence. But the circumstances of the crime, together with the ferocity of the act, allow no clemency for Jacek. The brutality of that killing is matched by the excess of a death by hanging, painstakingly prepared and carried out by its executors.
